This Huon Pine Bed and its replica twin, identical excepting the timber type (twin is ‘regular’ pine), are classic examples of Australian Furniture making from the late 1800s.
A prevalent timber in Colonial period Australian furniture, Huon is easy to carve, elastic and water and pest repellent.
Considered the rarest working timber in the world, Huon Pines grow in a narrow belt of wild Tasmanian forests and live to be 2000 years old!
So precious is the Huon that the felling of trees has been forbidden for the past 50 years. All modern Huon pieces are from logs found fallen on the forest floor.
