About Dirty Janes

about dirty janes

Dirty Janes is a true Australian family business. Run by the dynamic father-daughter duo Athol Salter and Jane Crowley, as well as son-in-law Bob, Dirty Janes offers a unique shopping experience in the heart of the Southern Highlands.

Athol & Jane’s first retail venture was The Shed, located in the nearby town of Mittagong. Trading for over 20 years, The Shed was a must visit for locals, tourists and a favoured haunt for decorators in need of a special piece for that design job.

In December 2009 The Shed closed its doors and Dirty Janes Bowral was born in the heart of Bowral.  This business was expanded to larger premises which housed a main showroom known as The Emporium in the front corner building, as well as an impressive warehouse space located behind the Emporium known as The Market.

The original Dirty Janes Bowral site underwent a major renovation in 2016, transforming the facade and internal fit out of the front building on the corner of Bong Bong & Banyette Street (formally The Emporium) into what is now a landmark building,  known as The Acre.

Dirty Janes Bowral is now all under one roof, located at the rear of the corner building. Covering over 1600 square metres of undercover space, making it the largest indoor market in the Southern Highlands.

Dirty Janes Canberra opened in March 2020. This site is for collectors and creatives alike and is a fabulous vintage shopping experience. Whether it’s the vast selection of vintage, retro and handcrafted items on sale, Antiquus Botanticus; our beautiful plant nursery, outdoor play area or the delicious coffee and tasty offerings from our resident café, Salters; Dirty Janes Canberra is sure to surprise and delight every member of your family.

Dirty Janes Bowral and Canberra both operate under our Covid 19 Management Plan that we developed using government guidelines to ensure the safety of all our staff and visitors to both stores. With over 1600 square meters in Bowral and 2000 square meters in Canberra, staff monitor the numbers of visitors to ensure social distancing is practiced. We are also providing free hand sanitiser for all customers, as well as adopting a more frequent cleaning schedule for all common areas. We look forward to welcoming you to our stores.
